About Our Assessments
Vogel Prep is very focused on achieving results. We believe that each student is unique and needs a strategic plan to achieve success. In order to develop a student’s plan we need to establish a baseline. To do so, we give each new student at Vogel Prep an assessment. These diagnostic tests include the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or any of the graduate tests.
Math Assessments
Math Skill Assessments
Math is everywhere; we need it to balance our accounts, keep track of inventories, do simple trade transactions, determine final prices for products on sale, or determine home spaces volumes to furnish our homes. Many students believe they are not good in math. In reality, they might have had some difficulties at some point of their learning experience with a math subject and because math topics build upon themselves, they feel frustrated and flustered if they cannot remember a topic that they studied two or three years prior. Our experience has proven that those difficulties can be overcome with the right support and assistance.
At Vogel Prep, we focus on first understanding the major topics that need to be strengthened in basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, or geometry to achieve mastery of these subjects. These subjects are the foundation for higher level math and science subjects. Then we develop a plan to address the issues or concerns.
Thus, if you have a student struggling in any of these subjects, let us know. With a quick math assessment, we can determine the areas of most difficulty for your student and then we can provide reinforcement on those topics and help your student gain confidence. If you would like to schedule an evaluation, please contact us at 480-990-7374, or email us at info@vogelprep.com.
Reading Assessments
The importance of reading skills cannot be underestimated. They impact our success in school, college, and beyond. Reading skills are critical for us to learn new subjects, develop new skills, understand writers’ intentions, compare and contrast facts, and determine cause and effects in observations of the materials presented to us.
At Vogel Prep, our personalized one-on-one approach starts by determining what each student needs. We will evaluate students in various types of materials from a technical article to a literary piece, we will measure reading comprehension, retention of details or facts, differential understanding of opinions and inferences, and words per minute. Our goal is to determine the kind of assistance that each student needs based on our initial evaluation.
If we see that the student can benefit from sharpening organizational, vocabulary, interpretation, or critical-thinking skills, then we will focus on that to improve the student's overall reading skills with our Q-Read program. For more information about the Q-Read Program, click here.
SAT & ACT Assessment
Which Test Is Best?
With the ACT gaining ground in the Eastern and Western United States, and with every college in America now accepting the ACT as readily as they accept the SAT, many students are left wondering which test to take – which test best matches their academic abilities. In general, the ACT favors faster readers and literal thinkers, while the SAT favors analytical thinkers.
The best way to measure relative ability is for a student to take both tests. This is more important this year because the SAT is being offered digitally while the ACT remains as a paper-based test. Given the difference in format, it is important for students to give a feel on both tests and we can help them become familiar with both to see which test they like best.
Our ACT and SAT assessments was created using a proprietary algorithm that provides information on overall performance. It is accompanied by a report that provides performance detail on every type of ACT and SAT question, and a recommendation of which test to take. Choosing which test to focus on early can save you countless hours and thousands of dollars preparing for an exam that may not suit your unique learning style.
Our students can take these assessments at home or by appointment at our center under timed conditions. The results are available quickly and a private phone consultation can be scheduled within 1 to 3 days.
There are no conditions attached to these free tests and consultation, other than 1) the student is provided with a distraction-free environment in which to take the test on the chosen test day, and 2) the student and at least one family member attends the consultation meeting. All the student needs is a desktop or laptop computer, but even an iPad or tablet will work. This online test must be taken within a 4-hour period, including two 10-minute breaks. It is easy and quick to register for this test. Simply click on this link , select your preferred test date and submit the registration form via our website. The registration will also allow you to select a date and time for your consultation.
